Objective: Code the first to third person mathematical transformation of data points.

Theory:

As we discussed on Friday, the theoretical group will be writing a 2-3 page essay on the practical application of the research we have been reviewing. In this essay, synthesize and expand upon the various articles by Luc Steels and others on the wiki in order to propose solutions to some of the issues we have been discussing.

Current Issues:

1) Grounding Symbols 

• Has Steels sufficiently solved the grounding problem by socially created meanings? If not, what are some other approaches, how does his current research differ and where could we go next?

   

2) 1st -> 3rd Person representation

•     The mathematical transformation of sensory information is simple enough, but what are some ways the agent can use this objective representation? Should there be multiple third person spaces relating to time? If so, how many spaces, is the choice arbitraty, how could the input from each space differ, i.e. does one space have precedence in one domain, for example motor execution, while another has precedence in planning?

3) Scanning the representation space

•      Under what circumstance should the third person represnetation be scanned? What should the limits or uses of this action be? What are the philosophical underpinnings of doing this action, i.e. is this mental simulation, and how should this simulation be compared to the normal third person representation. Should there be a belief, or future state third person representation to anticipate things in the future or recall things from the past?

The goal of this assignment is for the class to start building upon some of the research we have surveyed in order to advance the field. Dig into the research areas that interest you, and most importantly, think critically about how we can use this research to advance our project. Create your own theory based on what you have seen. Working in conjuction with computer programmers requires us theory people to create logical models that can be quantified into finite computer terms. This requires fleshing out the intricacies of a theory. Meditate on the current issues I have suggested, and other issues you find relevant, and formulate a plan. Please use APA citation as necessary, double or single space, 12pt. font, 2-3pg. This assignment is for a grade and due before class October 3.
